Snake Boots
Danner San Angelo 17-inch snake boot review
Danner's pull-on answer. No laces at all, on and off in seconds, and the tradeoff is that it cannot be tensioned to your foot.

Danner San Angelo 17-inch Snake Boot
DannerA western-style pull-on with snake protection to the full 17 inches. If your objection to snake boots is lacing a 17-inch boot in the dark, this is the answer.

|---|---|
| Shaft height | 17 in |
| Upper | Full-grain leather |

| Last | Western |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- On and off in seconds, which matters more than people expect
- All-leather upper takes conditioning and keeps going

Danner Sharptail 17-inch Snake Boot
DannerThe snake boot that walks like a hunting boot. A side zip, a real Danner platform, and 17 inches of coverage - which is why it is the one most upland hunters settle on.
| Protection claim | Snake protection to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 17 in |
| Upper | Full-grain leather and 1000D nylon |
| Waterproofing | Waterproof (manufacturer) |
| Closure | Lace-up with side zip |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- The side zip means you can get a 17-inch boot on and off without a fight
- Walks better than any other snake boot here - laces, a real last, a supportive midsole
- Danner's construction quality is the reason this survives multiple seasons of briar
Where it falls short
- The most expensive snake boot in this registry
- Hot. Seventeen inches of snake-resistant panel does not breathe, whatever the marketing says
- The guard is stiff for the first few outings and will rub a high instep

#3 · Buy-once leather, resoleable

Chippewa 17-inch Pull-On Snake Boot
ChippewaAn old-fashioned American-built pull-on with snake protection. Expensive, heavy, and the only boot here you would expect to resole twice.
| Protection claim | Snake-proof construction to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 17 in |
| Upper | Briar Pitstop leather |
| Construction | Goodyear welt |
| Closure | Pull-on |
What it does well
- Goodyear welted, so it can be resoled rather than replaced
- The leather is heavy enough to shrug off briar that marks nylon boots
Where it falls short
- The heaviest snake boot here, and it feels like it by mid-afternoon
- Premium price, and a break-in measured in weeks

What it is
A 17-inch full-grain leather pull-on on a western last, with snake protection claimed to the full shaft height. Think of it as a snake-protective cowboy boot rather than a hunting boot - which is exactly what a lot of hunters in Texas and Oklahoma actually want.
The case for a pull-on
- On and off in seconds. At 4am, and again at the truck, this matters more than people expect - and if lacing a 17-inch boot is what stops you wearing snake protection, this solves it.
- No lace hardware to fail, and nothing to catch in brush.
- All-leather upper. It takes conditioning and keeps going. The nylon panels on cheaper boots are what wear first.
- A western last suits a lot of feet that hunting lasts do not, particularly a wider forefoot with a narrow heel.
The case against
- You cannot tension it. Nothing takes up slack over the instep, so the heel lifts and over distance that means blisters. A lace-up walks better, and it is not close.
- A western heel is wrong on wet clay. The heel geometry that works in a stirrup is not what you want on a greasy sidehill.
- It is heavy. All-leather at 17 inches is the heaviest end of this category.
- The calf is molded, with no zip and no adjustment. If your calf is thick over a sock, this boot may simply not go on: snake boots for big calves.
How it compares with the Sharptail
| San Angelo | Sharptail | |
|---|---|---|
| Closure | Pull-on | Lace-up with side zip |
| Coverage claimed | 17 in, full shaft (manufacturer) | 17 in, full shaft (manufacturer) |
| Walks over distance | Moderately - heel lifts | Well |
| On and off | Seconds | Zip, then lace |
| Last | Western | Hunting |
| Upper | Full-grain leather | Leather and 1000D nylon |
| Who it suits | Short walks, ranch and truck hunting | Anyone covering ground |
Fit notes
Western lasts size differently from hunting lasts - commonly a half size down from your athletic shoe size, though that varies. Try the size before committing where you can, and remember that a pull-on has to clear your instep and your calf, which are two independent constraints: the sizing guide.
Our verdict
Buy it if your hunting is short walks from a truck or a ranch road and you want snake protection you can put on without thinking about it. If you walk any real distance, buy the Sharptail instead - the lace-up advantage outweighs everything the pull-on offers.
