Danner's defining characteristic is that their boots walk. Everything else - the recraftable stitchdown platforms, the Gore-Tex, the price - follows from building boots for people covering ground rather than people sitting still.
The Danner range, priced
The 800g Pronghorn, the Sharptail snake boot, the uninsulated Mountain 600, the value Vital, and the pull-on San Angelo.
#1 · All-day walking in the cold

Danner Pronghorn 800g
Danner800g in Danner's Pronghorn platform, which is built around a supportive midsole rather than a soft one. The boot to buy if your hunt is measured in miles.
| Insulation | 800g |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | Not published by manufacturer |
| Upper | Leather and nylon |
| Waterproofing | Gore-Tex (manufacturer) |
| Outsole | Danner Pronghorn |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- One of the few insulated boots that genuinely supports a loaded pack
- Gore-Tex plus a recraftable platform - this is a multi-season purchase
- 800g walks far better than 1,000g or more
Where it falls short
- Expensive, and the wide sizes are the ones that go out of stock
- Needs a real break-in period; do not buy it the week before a hunt

#2 · All-day walking in snake country

Danner Sharptail 17-inch Snake Boot
DannerThe snake boot that walks like a hunting boot. A side zip, a real Danner platform, and 17 inches of coverage - which is why it is the one most upland hunters settle on.
| Protection claim | Snake protection to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 17 in |
| Upper | Full-grain leather and 1000D nylon |
| Waterproofing | Waterproof (manufacturer) |
| Closure | Lace-up with side zip |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- The side zip means you can get a 17-inch boot on and off without a fight
- Walks better than any other snake boot here - laces, a real last, a supportive midsole
- Danner's construction quality is the reason this survives multiple seasons of briar
Where it falls short
- The most expensive snake boot in this registry
- Hot. Seventeen inches of snake-resistant panel does not breathe, whatever the marketing says
- The guard is stiff for the first few outings and will rub a high instep

#3 · Scouting and warm-weather miles

Danner Mountain 600 Leaf GTX
DannerNot a hunting boot in the insulated sense - an uninsulated Gore-Tex hiker that happens to be the right tool for August scouting and September archery.
| Insulation | None (uninsulated) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | Not published by manufacturer |
| Upper | Suede leather |
| Waterproofing | Gore-Tex (manufacturer) |
| Outsole | Vibram SPE/Megagrip |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- Comfortable out of the box in a way no insulated hunting boot is
- Vibram Megagrip is the best wet-rock outsole in this list
Where it falls short
- Zero insulation - this is the wrong boot the moment it gets cold
- Suede needs treating and does not love sustained mud

#4 · A cheaper Danner for early season

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
Danner Vital 8-inch, 400g
DannerDanner's value platform: 400g, a lighter build, and a price that does not assume you hunt for a living. Early and mid-season only.
| Insulation | 400g |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 8 in |
| Upper | Leather and nylon |
| Waterproofing | Danner Dry (manufacturer) |
| Fit | Lace-up |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- Light, flexible and barely needs breaking in
- The cheapest way into a boot that walks properly
Where it falls short
- Not recraftable like Danner's stitchdown boots
- 400g is early season - do not expect a December sit

#5 · A pull-on snake boot with no laces

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
Danner San Angelo 17-inch Snake Boot
DannerA western-style pull-on with snake protection to the full 17 inches. If your objection to snake boots is lacing a 17-inch boot in the dark, this is the answer.
| Protection claim | Snake protection to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 17 in |
| Upper | Full-grain leather |
| Closure | Pull-on |
| Last | Western |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- On and off in seconds, which matters more than people expect
- All-leather upper takes conditioning and keeps going
Where it falls short
- A pull-on cannot be tensioned, so it walks worse than the Sharptail over distance
- Western last does not suit every foot shape

- 7.8

What Danner does better than anyone
- Boots that support a loaded pack. The Pronghorn platform is built around a supportive midsole rather than a soft one, which is what matters at mile eight with meat on your back.
- Recraftable construction on their stitchdown boots: a $300 boot you resole twice is cheaper per season than three $150 boots.
- The best snake boot in the category. The Sharptail is the only snake boot we would plan a long day in - laces, a side zip, and a real platform: the review.
- Gore-Tex rather than a proprietary membrane on most models, which holds up longer in hard use.

- A cheaper Danner for early seasonVital 400g. See the picks
Where the range is weaker
- Price. Danner is the expensive answer at almost every point in the range, and the wide sizes are the ones that go out of stock.
- Break-in. Two to four weeks on the leather boots, and that is not optional: how to break in hunting boots.
- Nothing above 800g to 1,000g. For static deep cold you want rubber or a pac boot - Danner does not play there.
- No knee-high rubber. If your problem is water depth, this is the wrong maker.
- Not every model is recraftable. The Vital line is not, and that is part of how the price gets there.
Recrafting, and whether it is worth it
Danner's recrafting service rebuilds a stitchdown boot - new outsole, new midsole where needed, and a refurbished upper. The arithmetic works if the upper is sound: a recraft costs a fraction of a new boot and resets the boot's life. It does not work if the leather is cracked or the boot never fit you properly.
The practical rule: recraft before the midsole collapses, not after. A worn outsole is a cheap fix; a collapsed midsole is a much bigger job: boot care and storage.

Snake Boots
Danner Sharptail 17-inch snake boot review
The snake boot that walks like a hunting boot. Expensive, hot, and the one we recommend most often.

Cold Weather Boots

Five insulated boots from 400g to 1,600g, each matched to a temperature AND an activity level rather than ranked on warmth alone.

Boot Fit & Sizing

A mileage problem, not a temperature problem. Shanks, modest insulation, and a break-in that starts in July.
