#3 · All-day walking in snake country

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
Danner Sharptail 17-inch Snake Boot
DannerThe snake boot that walks like a hunting boot. A side zip, a real Danner platform, and 17 inches of coverage - which is why it is the one most upland hunters settle on.
| Protection claim | Snake protection to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 17 in |
| Upper | Full-grain leather and 1000D nylon |
| Waterproofing | Waterproof (manufacturer) |
| Closure | Lace-up with side zip |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- The side zip means you can get a 17-inch boot on and off without a fight
- Walks better than any other snake boot here - laces, a real last, a supportive midsole
- Danner's construction quality is the reason this survives multiple seasons of briar
Where it falls short
- The most expensive snake boot in this registry
- Hot. Seventeen inches of snake-resistant panel does not breathe, whatever the marketing says
- The guard is stiff for the first few outings and will rub a high instep

What it is
A 16-inch waterproof snake boot in leather and nylon with a side zip, claimed by Rocky to be snake-proof to the full shaft height. It is the most commonly recommended value snake boot, and it earns that position.
Why it is the value pick
- A side zip at this price. The zip is the feature that makes a tall boot livable, and it is unusual below the premium tier.
- Waterproof construction, which not every budget snake boot offers.
- Sixteen inches is adequate coverage for most ground, and it is cooler and easier to get on than 17 or 18: the height guide.
- It is from an established maker with a published claim, rather than an unbranded listing.
Where the money was saved
| The compromise | |
|---|---|
| Support underfoot | Buyers consistently report less arch support than premium boots. A structured insole is a cheap and effective fix |
| Upper durability | More nylon, less leather - wears faster in heavy briar |
| Coverage height | 16 in rather than 17 or 18 |
| Refinement | The platform is not a Danner platform, and you feel it over distance |
The arch support point is the one worth acting on: a $40 structured insole takes most of that complaint away, and the combination still costs well under a premium boot. See the insole guide and the insole picks.
Who should buy it
- Anyone who needs snake protection and cannot justify $350. This is the boot.
- Hunters who walk moderate distances, not eight-mile days. With an insole it is comfortable for a morning.
- Anyone whose ground is open enough that 16 inches is enough coverage.
- Anyone buying their first snake boot and unsure whether they will stick with the category.
Who should not
- Long-mileage hunters. Buy the Sharptail; the platform difference matters at distance.
- Palmetto and heavy briar hunters, who want 17 to 18 inches and a leather-heavy upper.
- Hunters who sit on the ground. Go taller: turkey hunting snake protection.
- Anyone with occasional exposure. Gaiters are cheaper still.
Fit notes
Rocky's unisex sizing on the Lynx runs small enough that it is also one of the more commonly recommended options for women, which is worth knowing given how thin that market is: snake boots for women. Size over a midweight sock, and plan on a structured insole from the start.
