Snake Boots
Snake boot height and coverage
Shaft height is the only measurable thing in this category. Here is what each height covers on an average leg, and what ground justifies it.

Everything else in snake footwear is a claim. Height is a measurement, which makes it the most useful thing to shop on. The table first, then the qualifications.
| Shaft height | Covers to (average adult leg) | Ground it suits | Heat penalty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8-10 in | Mid to upper calf is EXPOSED | Not snake protection | None |
| 13-15 in | Mid calf | Open trails; shorter legs; women's boots | Lowest |
| 16 in | Upper calf | Open timber, fields, most hunting | Moderate |
| 17 in | Just below the knee | Palmetto, briar, tall grass | High |
| 18 in | At the knee | Thick cover; sitting on the ground | Highest |
| Gaiters | Boot top to knee, foot exposed | Occasional snake ground | Removable |
| Chaps | Boot top to thigh, foot exposed | Very thick thorny cover | Highest overall |
Height is relative to your leg, not absolute
A 17-inch boot on a 6'4" hunter reaches a different point on the leg than the same boot on a 5'4" hunter. On a shorter leg, a 15-inch boot can cover the same proportion of the lower leg as a 17-inch boot does on a tall person - and it will be cooler and easier to get on. This is the main reason the women's category sensibly runs shorter: snake boots for women.
What decides how much you need
Pick coverage by visibility and posture
- You can see where you step16 inches. Open timber, maintained trails, fields. See the picks
- You cannot see your feet17 to 18 inches. Palmetto, briar, tall grass. See the picks
- You sit on the ground17 inches minimum - sitting puts your calf at ground level. See the picks
- Rocky ledges and outcrops17 inches, and watch where you put your hands. See the picks
Boots at each useful height
An 18-inch, two 17s, a women's 15, and gaiters for the removable option.
#1 · Turkey hunting in snake country

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
LaCrosse Venom II NWTF 18-inch
LaCrosseEighteen inches of coverage with a side zip, built for turkey season - which is exactly when snake risk and hunting pressure overlap most in the South.
| Protection claim | Snake-proof construction to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 18 in |
| Upper | Leather and nylon |
| Waterproofing | Waterproof (manufacturer) |
| Closure | Lace-up with side zip |
Specifications per LaCrosse Footwear published specifications.
What it does well
- The tallest coverage here, and the extra inch is real when you are sitting against a tree
- Side zip plus laces is the best of both closures
Where it falls short
- Hot - this is a lot of boot for a May morning in Alabama
- Camo-specific colorway limits where else you will wear it

#2 · All-day walking in snake country

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
Danner Sharptail 17-inch Snake Boot
DannerThe snake boot that walks like a hunting boot. A side zip, a real Danner platform, and 17 inches of coverage - which is why it is the one most upland hunters settle on.
| Protection claim | Snake protection to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 17 in |
| Upper | Full-grain leather and 1000D nylon |
| Waterproofing | Waterproof (manufacturer) |
| Closure | Lace-up with side zip |
Specifications per Danner published specifications.
What it does well
- The side zip means you can get a 17-inch boot on and off without a fight
- Walks better than any other snake boot here - laces, a real last, a supportive midsole
- Danner's construction quality is the reason this survives multiple seasons of briar
Where it falls short
- The most expensive snake boot in this registry
- Hot. Seventeen inches of snake-resistant panel does not breathe, whatever the marketing says
- The guard is stiff for the first few outings and will rub a high instep

#3 · The value pick in leather snake boots

Rocky Lynx Snake Boot
RockyA waterproof 16-inch snake boot at roughly half the price of the premium options. The compromise is the platform underneath, not the protection.
| Protection claim | Snake-proof construction to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 16 in |
| Upper | Leather and nylon |
| Waterproofing | Waterproof (manufacturer) |
| Closure | Lace-up with side zip |
Specifications per Rocky Boots published specifications.
What it does well
- The cheapest side-zip waterproof snake boot from a known maker
- 16 inches is adequate coverage for most ground
Where it falls short
- Buyers consistently report less arch support than the premium boots
- Nylon panels wear faster in heavy briar

#4 · Women who want leather, not rubber

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
Chippewa Cottonwood 15-inch, women's
ChippewaOne of the very few women's-last snake boots built in leather rather than molded rubber, at 15 inches instead of a scaled-up 17.
| Protection claim | Snake-proof construction to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 15 in |
| Upper | Leather |
| Last | Women's |
| Closure | Lace-up |
What it does well
- A real women's last, which is rare in this category and is the main reason to buy it
- 15 inches tracks better with a shorter calf than a 17-inch boot
Where it falls short
- Expensive, and stock is thin in both directions of the size range
- Heavy leather needs breaking in

#5 · Adding protection to boots you own

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
CrackShot Snake Bite Proof Guardz Gaiters
CrackShotGaiters are the cheap answer to the snake question: strap them over the boots you already own and like, and take them off when the ground changes.
| Protection claim | Snake-bite-resistant fabric (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Knee to boot top |
| Closure | Side closure with instep strap |
| Weight | Not published by manufacturer |
| Fit | One size range, adjustable |
What it does well
- A fraction of the price of a dedicated snake boot
- Lets you keep hunting in the boot that actually fits you
- Comes off in seconds when you leave snake ground
Where it falls short
- Leaves the boot itself unprotected, so a strike below the gaiter hem is on the boot
- The instep strap wears and is the part that fails
- Hot across the calf in summer, like everything in this category

- 7.6

Where the protection stops, exactly
The protective panel runs the full height of the shaft on every boot we have looked at, and it stops there. Which means:
- Above the shaft is unprotected. A boot top is a hard line, not a gradient.
- The zip, where fitted, is part of the covered area - which is why leaving it partly open defeats the point.
- The weakest point on cheap boots is where the panel meets a soft gusset or panel. Inspect that junction before you buy; it is where corners get cut.
- Nothing protects your hands, which the CDC lists alongside the lower leg among the commonest bite locations.
Two inches of extra height is not free
Each extra inch adds heat, weight, stiffness and difficulty getting the boot on - and a boot you stop wearing protects nothing. The practical rule we would give anyone: buy the tallest boot you will genuinely wear in the warmest month you hunt. For a lot of Southern hunters that is 16 inches, and 16 worn beats 18 in the truck.
