Boot Fit & Sizing

What size boot to buy over thick socks

Half a size for a heavyweight wool sock, a full size for a sock plus a liner. And the reason it matters more than comfort: a tight boot is a cold boot.

The short answer, and then the reason it is more important than it sounds. A heavyweight wool sock takes about half a size. A heavyweight sock plus a thin liner takes a full size. A midweight sock takes nothing - size true.

Why this is a warmth question, not a comfort question

Boot insulation works by trapping still air. Compress that air out and the insulation stops working, which is why a 1,000g boot laced tight over a heavy sock can feel colder than an 800g boot that fits. On top of that, pressure restricts blood flow, and blood is what delivers heat to your toes in the first place.

So the test is not whether the boot feels snug and supportive. The test is: sitting still, can you wiggle all your toes freely? If not, the boot is cold no matter what the label says. Why your feet get cold on stand covers the full mechanism.

Buy the socks first

This is the single most useful piece of sequencing in hunting footwear and almost nobody does it. Buy the socks you intend to hunt in, then fit the boots over them. A boot fitted over a thin store sock and then worn with a heavyweight merino is a boot that does not fit, and the socks cost a tenth of the boots.

Which socks, by weight, is the sock weight guide; the picks are in best merino wool hunting socks.

The socks to size around, and the insole that tunes the result

A heavyweight, a max-cushion, a thin liner, a volume-filling insole, and a gusseted boot for when the calf is the constraint.

Darn Tough Hunter Boot Sock, heavyweight

Darn Tough
9.0/10

Merino with a full cushion, knit in Vermont, guaranteed for life. The sock we would buy first, and the cheapest real upgrade to a cold boot.

Published specifications
MaterialMerino wool blend
WeightHeavyweight, full cushion
HeightBoot height
WarrantyUnconditional lifetime guarantee (manufacturer)
Made inVermont, USA (manufacturer)

Specifications per Darn Tough Vermont published specifications.

What it does well

  • The lifetime guarantee is honored, which changes the cost-per-season arithmetic completely
  • Fine-gauge merino cushions without the bulk that makes a boot tight
  • Wool keeps insulating when damp, which is the whole reason not to wear cotton

Where it falls short

  • Three times the price of a drugstore wool-blend sock
  • Full cushion needs boot room. If you are already snug, size the boot up before buying the sock

Smartwool Mountaineer Max Cushion

8.6/10

A mountaineering sock pressed into hunting service: maximum cushion, a tall cuff, and the warmest non-powered option here.

Published specifications
MaterialMerino wool blend
WeightMax cushion
HeightCrew to over-the-calf depending on cut
Intended useMountaineering and winter
WarrantyTwo-year guarantee (manufacturer)

What it does well

  • The thickest wool sock most people will tolerate in a hunting boot
  • Mountaineering construction means fewer seams where it matters

Where it falls short

  • Will not fit a boot sized for a normal sock - the classic sizing mistake
  • Overkill above about 25F

Two layers that slide against each other, so friction happens between the sock layers instead of against your skin. The most effective anti-blister item here.

Published specifications
MaterialSynthetic, double layer
WeightLight
HeightCrew
ConstructionTwo bonded layers (manufacturer)
WarrantyBlister-free guarantee (manufacturer)

What it does well

  • The double-layer mechanism genuinely works, and it is different from simply adding padding
  • Can be worn as a liner under a wool sock in cold weather

Where it falls short

  • Synthetic, so it is cold when damp compared with wool
  • Two layers take up boot volume - account for it when sizing

Superfeet All-Purpose High Arch

The classic high-volume support insole. It will not make a boot warmer, and it is the most reliable fix there is for arch and heel pain on long days.

Published specifications
TypeStructured support insole
Arch profileHigh
VolumeHigh (fills a roomy boot)
TrimmableYes
Stated life12 months of regular use (manufacturer)

What it does well

  • A rigid stabilizer cap under the heel, which is what actually controls heel pain
  • Takes up volume, so it also tightens a boot you sized up for socks

Where it falls short

  • Adds no insulation whatsoever - a common and expensive misconception
  • High volume makes an already-snug boot too tight, and tight boots are cold boots

LaCrosse Alphaburly Pro 18-inch, 800g

LaCrosse
8.8/10

The same boot as the 1,600g with half the insulation, and for most hunters in most of the country it is the smarter buy: warm enough sitting down to about freezing, survivable walking in.

Published specifications
Insulation800g
Shaft height18 in
UpperVulcanized rubber over neoprene
Calf fitAdjustable back gusset
LinerRemovable EVA footbed

Specifications per LaCrosse Footwear published specifications.

What it does well

  • The widest usable temperature window of any boot here - roughly 20F sitting to 50F walking
  • Same gusset, same rubber, same scent profile as the 1,600g version
  • If you are buying one rubber boot and do not know your conditions, this is the one

Where it falls short

  • Not enough boot for an all-day December sit in the north
  • Still heavy for covering ground

Two thick socks does not work

It seems obvious - twice the sock, twice the warmth - and it fails for the same reason a tight boot fails. Two heavy socks fill the space the insulation needs and squeeze your foot. A thin liner under one heavy sock works, because the liner adds almost no bulk while reducing friction. Sock layering has the detail.

What about rubber pull-ons

Same length adjustment, plus a second constraint that shoe size does not address: the calf. A 17-inch pull-on over a heavy sock is tight at the top regardless of the size you order, so measure the calf and buy a gusseted boot if you are over about 17 inches: rubber boots for wide calves.

When you cannot try them on

  1. Order the size the maker's chart gives for your measured foot, with the sock adjustment above.
  2. Wear them indoors with the actual socks for an hour, on carpet, with the laces done properly.
  3. Check heel lift, toe room on a downhill, and whether you can wiggle your toes sitting still.
  4. If it is close but roomy, add a structured insole rather than returning for a smaller size: the insole guide.
  5. If your toes touch or you cannot wiggle them, return it. A boot that is too small does not break in bigger.

Frequently asked questions

Should I size up hunting boots for thick socks?
Half a size for a heavyweight wool sock, and a full size for a heavyweight sock plus a thin liner. A midweight sock needs no adjustment. Going up a full size for a midweight sock gives you a boot that slides and blisters.
Will thick socks make my boots too tight?
They will if the boot was sized for a thinner sock, and that matters more than comfort: compressed insulation traps no air and pressure restricts blood flow, so a tight boot is a genuinely cold boot. Buy the socks first and fit the boots over them.
Can I wear two pairs of socks instead of sizing up?
Not two thick pairs - they compress the boot's insulation and squeeze your foot. A thin liner under one heavyweight sock works well, adds almost no bulk, and reduces blisters.
How do I know if my boots are too tight for cold weather?
Sit down in the boots with your hunting socks on and try to wiggle all your toes. If you cannot move them freely, the boot is too tight to insulate properly, regardless of its gram rating.
