Snake Boots
Snake boots or rubber boots: can rubber stop a bite?
Plain rubber boots are not sold as snake protection and we will not present them that way. Here is what the makers claim, and what to do if you need water depth and coverage at once.

The question comes up constantly, and the answer is straightforward. A plain rubber hunting boot is not snake protection, is not tested as snake protection, and is not sold as snake protection. Thick rubber offers more resistance than fabric, and that is not the same as a boot built and claimed for the purpose.
What complicates it is that a handful of boots are both: rubber-and-nylon constructions that their makers do claim snake protection for. Those are a real category and they are where this page lands.

When you need water and coverage at the same time
This is a real problem - a lot of snake country is also wet, and most leather snake boots are waterproof only to the lace line. Three workable answers:
- A rubber-and-nylon boot with a snake claim such as the TIDEWE, or a purpose-built warm-weather model such as the Dryshod Viperstop. Cheapest route to both, with the durability caveats.
- Gaiters over a knee-high rubber boot. The rubber handles the water, the gaiter adds the lower-leg claim, and the whole thing comes apart when you leave snake ground. This is what we would do.
- A waterproof leather snake boot such as the Rocky Lynx, accepting that water depth stops at the lace line.
All three routes, priced
A rubber boot with a snake claim, the warm-weather option, a plain knee boot, gaiters, and a waterproof leather snake boot.

TIDEWE 16-inch snake boot
TIDEWERubber-and-nylon snake boots for well under a hundred dollars. If the alternative is no snake boot at all, this is a serious option - with the obvious caveats.
| Protection claim | Snake-proof construction (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 16 in |
| Upper | Rubber and nylon |
| Waterproofing | Waterproof (manufacturer) |
| Insulation | Insulated (grams not published) |
What it does well
- A quarter the price of a premium snake boot with a comparable stated coverage height
- Waterproof rubber lower, so it doubles as a wet-ground boot
Where it falls short
- Buyers consistently report sizing inconsistency and a short service life
- No independent standard backs any snake-boot claim, and that matters more at this price point
- Minimal support - these are a stand-and-walk-a-little boot

#2 · Snake protection in genuine heat

Dryshod Viperstop
DryshodA warm-weather snake boot, which is a rare and useful thing: the snake problem peaks in summer and most snake boots are built like winter boots.
| Protection claim | Snake-protective construction (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | Not published by manufacturer |
| Upper | Rubber over foam bootie |
| Design | Warm-weather (manufacturer) |
| Fit | Pull-on |
What it does well
- Built for the season you actually need snake protection in
- Pull-on and waterproof, so it handles creek crossings as well as brush
Where it falls short
- A pull-on cannot be tensioned for long miles
- Coverage height is not consistently published - check the listing

#3 · One boot for most of the season

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
LaCrosse Alphaburly Pro 18-inch, 800g
LaCrosseThe same boot as the 1,600g with half the insulation, and for most hunters in most of the country it is the smarter buy: warm enough sitting down to about freezing, survivable walking in.
| Insulation | 800g |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 18 in |
| Upper | Vulcanized rubber over neoprene |
| Calf fit | Adjustable back gusset |
| Liner | Removable EVA footbed |
Specifications per LaCrosse Footwear published specifications.
What it does well
- The widest usable temperature window of any boot here - roughly 20F sitting to 50F walking
- Same gusset, same rubber, same scent profile as the 1,600g version
- If you are buying one rubber boot and do not know your conditions, this is the one
Where it falls short
- Not enough boot for an all-day December sit in the north
- Still heavy for covering ground

#4 · Adding protection to boots you own

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 6, 2026
CrackShot Snake Bite Proof Guardz Gaiters
CrackShotGaiters are the cheap answer to the snake question: strap them over the boots you already own and like, and take them off when the ground changes.
| Protection claim | Snake-bite-resistant fabric (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Knee to boot top |
| Closure | Side closure with instep strap |
| Weight | Not published by manufacturer |
| Fit | One size range, adjustable |
What it does well
- A fraction of the price of a dedicated snake boot
- Lets you keep hunting in the boot that actually fits you
- Comes off in seconds when you leave snake ground
Where it falls short
- Leaves the boot itself unprotected, so a strike below the gaiter hem is on the boot
- The instep strap wears and is the part that fails
- Hot across the calf in summer, like everything in this category

#5 · The value pick in leather snake boots

Rocky Lynx Snake Boot
RockyA waterproof 16-inch snake boot at roughly half the price of the premium options. The compromise is the platform underneath, not the protection.
| Protection claim | Snake-proof construction to full shaft height (manufacturer) |
|---|---|
| Shaft height | 16 in |
| Upper | Leather and nylon |
| Waterproofing | Waterproof (manufacturer) |
| Closure | Lace-up with side zip |
Specifications per Rocky Boots published specifications.
What it does well
- The cheapest side-zip waterproof snake boot from a known maker
- 16 inches is adequate coverage for most ground
Where it falls short
- Buyers consistently report less arch support than the premium boots
- Nylon panels wear faster in heavy briar

Why rubber is not simply thicker protection
Penetration resistance is not purely about thickness - it is about the material's ability to resist a sharp point without deforming around it. The dense woven and laminated panels in snake boots are engineered for that; rubber is engineered for flexibility and waterproofing. We have tested none of this, and that is precisely the point: in the absence of a standard or a test, the only honest basis is what each maker claims about their own product.
What people actually do
In practice, many hunters in wet snake country wear a knee-high rubber boot and accept the risk, because the water is a certainty and the snake is a possibility. That is a reasonable judgment call that we are not going to lecture anyone about - and if you want to reduce the risk without changing boots, a $40 open-backed shield over rubber boots is the cheapest meaningful upgrade available.
